Charges in Smaller Car Parks

We call for Horsham District Council to abandon plans to introduce car park charges in smaller car parks across the District.

These charges will

  • Harm local businesses by deterring shoppers
  • Cause major problems in roads close to shops as drivers avoid paying parking charges
  • Be costly to administer and enforce
  • Not be supported by additional cycle parking to encourage cycling

The Tories justify this on the basis that Government grant is being reduced. In fact, it is being replaced by New Homes Bonus and increased retention of Business Rates. Local businesses pay Business Rates so that services can be provided, including car parks which encourage residents and visitors to shop locally. HDC could use this funding to continue to provide local car parking and help support our growing communities and our local traders.
